#Obstacles and Adversaries

Obstacles and Adversaries can be thought of as anything that stands between a Gladiator and their goals, with Obstacles being more static, and Adversaries being more active.

Obstacles

Obstacles are static challenges that get in the way of a Gladiator. They can be natural features, extreme weather events, or man made obstacles.

Natural obstacles might be things like a gorge, cliffs, mountains, thickets, tar pits, or quicksand

Weather obstacles can be things like a sandstorm, tornado, hail, or a thunderstorm

Man made obstacles might be high walls, barbed wire fences, caltrops, and wire traps

Adversaries

Adversaries are active opponents that come in either a beastial, humanoid, or spirit form. Beasts are less intelligent creatures that act mostly on instinct. Humanoid adversaries are more intelligent and act based on desires, allegiances, and individual goals. Spirits are strange adversaries that challenge gladiators in psychological and emotional ways just as much as physical, and they may not have a corporeal form that can be interacted with

Beasts can be categorized into:

  • Common Beasts - Run of the mill wild animals. Generally not dangerous for a gladiator but can be a nuisance to the public
  • Great Beasts - Large beasts often with magical abilities of some kind
  • Draconic/Titanic Beasts - Beasts of enormous size and incredible elemental power
    • Glacial Moose Dragon
    • Volcanic Turtle Dragon
    • Tempest Eagle Dragon
    • Deep Whale Dragon
    • Dune Serpent Dragon

Humanoids can be categorized into:

  • Common Foes like foot soldiers and bandits
  • Command Foes that carry a title and are often in charge of a group of Common Foes
  • Champions which are often rival gladiators, high ranking royal guards, or occasionally royalty themselves

Spirits can be categorized into:

  • Sprites - small spirits found everywhere that generally aren’t a problem, but can be troublesome when feeling malicious
  • Phantoms - larger spirits often tied to a specific place, person, or event. Often territorial or vengeful
  • Terrors - The most powerful spirits with power beyond our comprehension
